The third annual NAERIC Versatility Ranch Horse Stake was held at the Westoba Agricultural Centre of Excellence in Brandon, Manitoba on October 8, 2010.  Ali Mullin, Cartwright, Manitoba improved upon her runner-up placing last year to win this year’s event, taking home $800.  She rode her homebred, DC Peppys Picaprize to take the title.  Taking second place, along with $600 was Sonja McGee, Deloraine, Manitoba riding My Twistin King.  And third place, was Kirk Bridgeman, Rapid City, Manitoba riding Boggies Ms Jay and winning $400.

The Versatility Ranch Horse competition stake is open to three year old Quarter Horses, Appaloosas and Paints that is NAERIC enrolled and sired by a nominated stallion.  A list of nominated stallions for each competition year can be found on the NAERIC website, www.naeric.org.  The 2011 purse will be $7000 based on 40 nominated stallions.

The Versatility Ranch Horse competition is a relatively new concept, with one horse, one rider competing in 5 different classes.  Ranch Riding, this class shows the horse’s ability to move at a working speed with a rider.  Ranch Trail, this class contains an obstacle course designed to show a horse’s ability and willingness to perform several tasks that might be asked of him during the course of a normal day’s ranch work.  Ranch Cutting, a single numbered cow is cut from the herd and the horse must demonstrate its ability to work the cow.  Working Ranch Horse, this class combines the ability of the working ranch horse to rein, handle cattle and put its rider in the position to rope and stop a cow.  Ranch Conformation, the last class of the day, horses should have a positive combination of balance, structural correctness and movement with appropriate breed and sex characteristic, along with adequate muscling.

This years’ event was organized by Larry Clifford and judged by Bobbie Harrison.  For more information about the NAERIC Versatility Ranch Hose Stake, contact equine ranchers, Kevin Bridgeman (204) 847-2112 or Dean Fenty (204) 567-3561.
